New Director of Advising to Offer Academic and Career Guidance to FC Students
Students looking for helpful and professional academic and career advice have a new friend on campus: Dr. Stephen Walker, our new Director of Advising. Though he would never boast about it, Steve has a unique background of success in academics, business, and professional counseling which make him eminently qualified to offer professional academic and career advice to our students. After earning a master’s degree in electrical engineering from Stanford and a PhD from Georgia Tech, Steve spent the next 20 years in the Telecommunications industry. During this time he worked for an array of companies, starting as a Research Engineer for Bell Labs and eventually becoming the Vice President of Engineering at ADC Telecommunications. But after 20 years of engineering success, Dr. Walker decided it was time for a career change. He wanted to do something entirely different, something to help individual people. After talking it over with his wife, Steve reset his course to pursue a new career in marriage and family counseling. And that is exactly what he did. He returned to school, earned a master’s in Counseling Psychology, and then opened his own clinic in Roanoke, Virginia where he served the community for the next 5 years. Now, as Florida College has strategically sought to improve its ability to provide its students with academic and career guidance, we are privileged to have a person of Dr. Walker’s caliber join our staff. The many degrees he has earned at several universities make him more than qualified to offer academic advice, his professional successes allow him to give authoritative and real-world career guidance, and his servant’s heart for helping others make him a natural choice for advising the student body. Welcome, Dr. Walker. |
