Commencement Exercises Bring
Year to an End

In its sixty-third commencement exercises, Florida College said goodbye to 174 graduates—and its longtime president.

One-hundred thirty-three associate of arts graduates shared the stage with forty-one bachelor degree students—including six members of the first bachelor of science degree in business administration class. Two students even earned a bachelor degree in double majors (biblical studies and liberal studies).

This marked the final commencement exercise as president for Dr. C. G. “Colly” Caldwell ’64, who began his tenure as president in 1991. Caldwell also served as commencement speaker for the evening. In his speech, he urged graduates to build their lives on the foundation of Jesus Christ.

Dr. Caldwell presented the president's award to Lorenzo Cum of Talmassons, Italy. Cum, a liberal studies graduate, was lauded for his strong work ethic and academic accomplishments.

Dr. H. E. “Buddy” Payne ’65, academic dean, presented the dean's award to Wendell “Woody” Baughman, of Tampa. Payne told the story of how Baughman overcame multiple obstacles—including severe heart problems—to achieve his goal of a college degree.
