Adopt Student Spotlight: Micah Cantonwine

Adopt student Micah Cantonwine came to FC to strengthen her faith and has found a community of support both academically and personally.

“It’s very encouraging to be around others who want to follow God,” said the first-year student from Greencastle, Indiana. “If you only looked at my academic performance you wouldn’t know what was happening in my life, because school is my escape.”

In 2021, Micah’s family was forever changed when her father experienced sudden onset of Sjogren’s Disease and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS).

“He woke up from a nap on Sunday afternoon to go to church, and immediately knew something was wrong,” Micah explained. “He’s been sick ever since, from inflammation of the body.”

The conditions compromised his immune system and memory, leaving him with seizures and debilitating short-term memory loss. With her father unable to work, Micah stepped in to help her two younger sisters and her mom, an elementary school teacher, around the house. A soccer player sidelined by a concussion her senior year, Micah worked through high school as a coach and referee for youth soccer programs.

“I was starting to plan for college and knew about FC from the Indiana Camp I attended, but also knew I could get a full ride from a state school because of financial aid,” she said. “When looking through financial aid options at FC I saw the Adopt program, and thought, ‘I might as well try.’”

Micah was eventually matched by the Advancement office to a family in Indiana and is now double majoring in finance and business, with hopes of earning her CPA.

“Coming to FC has been an adjustment, but I’ve joined the Woven’s Club and there are people here who support me and that I can talk to. The only reason I’m here is because of scholarships,” Micah said. “Every donation is appreciated, because you don’t always know the story behind who you’re helping. Grades don’t tell the
entire story.”

By giving to the Adopt Program, you can help students like Micah have an FC experience.
