Creating A Studio Rooted in Christ: Alumna Builds Christ-Centered Music School

When Ismaelena Serrano (‘12) first stepped onto the campus of Florida College, she was searching for more than a degree. She was looking for community, purpose, and a place where her faith and passion for music could grow side by side.

“What first drew me to Florida College was a deep desire to be with people who were after the same things in life I was,” she shared. “The idea of spending a few formative years surrounded by God’s people while studying and preparing for my future felt almost too good to be true.”

It didn’t take long for her to feel at home. After visiting campus and spending time with the music program, she was convinced.

“I was immediately struck by how gifted and articulate the professors were, and even more by how evident their love for teaching and music was.”

That passion left a lasting imprint. Under the mentorship of Dr. Jon Bassett, her voice teacher, Serrano developed not only her vocal technique but also her philosophy of teaching. Serving as his secretary for three years gave her a front-row seat to the artistry and care behind shaping young musicians.

“From him, I learned the foundation of what it truly means to mold, shape, and ultimately free the voice to become all that God designed it to be,” she said. “The art of singing became the great love of my life.”

Nearly a decade after graduating, she found herself unexpectedly auditioning for a master’s program in choral conducting. The conducting skills she learned in college carried her through the moment and ultimately earned her a place in her second master’s program, proof that seeds planted years earlier were still bearing fruit.

Today, those seeds have grown into something beautiful: Songbird Music School. Serrano founded the school to create a space where excellence in music and a vibrant, Christian faith could coexist naturally. Songbird offers private lessons in voice, piano, guitar, violin, viola, cello, and flute, with plans to expand to a second location later this year.

“I wanted to open my own school so I could put my degrees to use in a way that aligned with my values and vision,” she explained. “Most importantly, I wanted the opportunity to openly infuse my faith into everything I do.”

And she does just that.

“Wherever there are people, there is an opportunity to plant a seed or shine the light of Christ,” Serrano said. “Every time I meet a new student, I see a new soul; an opportunity to share God’s love.”

Scripture on the walls, hymns in the lobby, and intentional hiring of Christian teachers all help create an atmosphere that points students toward something greater than musical success.

For Serrano, teaching music isn’t simply about technique or performance. It’s about relationship. Seeing students at the same time each week opens doors to meaningful conversations and lasting spiritual impact. She prays that God will continue to use Songbird to bless her family and reflect His light to every person who walks through its doors.

Her advice to current students dreaming of turning passion into profession is simple but powerful.

“Make God the center of both your passion and your profession. Share every hope and desire with Him…trust that He wants to guide you, protect you, and love you beyond comprehension.”
