(Temple Terrace, Fla.) – Three Florida College nursing students have become the school’s first to be welcomed into the Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society (Sigma). Emma Andrews, Hailey Rutledge and Megan Turner were inducted into Sigma’s Phi Gamma Chapter in the spring of 2024.

“Students applying must be enrolled in a nationally accredited nursing program, which meant 2024 was the first cohort who qualified for membership as our accreditation was not final until after the initial cohort graduated this spring,” explained FC Nursing Program Chair Minerva Holk, EdD. “Sigma is recognized as a leader in the profession of nursing and members have to meet a high standard, which is a positive reflection of the quality of the FC nursing program.”

In addition to building graduates’ resumes, membership benefits include access to research, professional development and services that focus on the core areas of education, leadership, career development, evidence-based nursing and scholarships.

Holk said membership is an honor that recognizes the achievement of baccalaureate nursing students who have completed at least 50 percent of their nursing curriculum and maintained a GPA greater than 3.0. Membership is limited to the top 35 percent of a nursing cohort, and nurses may also become members by being nursing leaders in the profession after at least one year in practice. Holk anticipates three 2025 cohort students could join the newly inducted members in the next school year.

Sigma has more than 100,000 active members and 600 chapters at institutions of higher education and healthcare partners worldwide. Sigma members include clinical nurses and administrators, academic nurse educators and researchers, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and others working to fulfill the organization’s vision of connected, empowered nurse leaders transforming global healthcare.
