Florida College Alumni Help Cultivate A Supportive, Student-Centered Environment At Patel Elementary

At Patel Elementary in Tampa, a noticeable sense of connection has developed among a growing number of educators who share a common background from Florida College. While each teacher brings their own strengths and classroom style, their shared preparation and values have contributed to a strong sense of collaboration, trust, and consistency across the school community.
For third-grade teacher and FC alum Savannah Vrooman (‘23), one of the most meaningful aspects of working alongside fellow alumni is the trust that naturally develops.
“We know that collectively we see students as souls rather than just a score or number on a roster.”
That shared perspective also shapes how teachers support one another and collaborate in daily practice. According to Vrooman, their common background allows for a deeper level of understanding in both communication and professional expectations, helping create a more unified approach to instruction and student care. Her personal values also influence how she navigates her role in a public school setting.
“It changes everything,” she says. “We can pray on behalf of students and families, exercise the fruit of the spirit in our daily interactions, turn the other cheek, handle ourselves with humility and grace, and show godly love even if we aren’t able to speak about Him.”
Even within professional boundaries, she emphasizes that qualities such as kindness, respect, and integrity remain central to her daily work with students and families.
Principal Ashley Galfond has observed similar strengths among these educators. She notes that Florida College graduates arrive well prepared for the classroom and demonstrate a strong ability to build relationships with students from the start. She also highlights their willingness to grow professionally and adapt to the needs of the school environment.
Galfond adds that their influence extends beyond individual classrooms.
“They have made a positive impact on our school culture,” she explains, emphasizing their collaboration, professionalism, and commitment to creating a supportive staff environment.
She also notes their consistent strengths in classroom management, flexibility, and relationship-building, which contribute to a positive and studentcentered school culture.
Together, these educators help shape a school environment defined by trust, collaboration, and shared purpose. At Patel Elementary, their presence has contributed to a culture where professional excellence and strong relationships go hand in hand in serving students each day.
