SGT Benjamin McVicker, USA (’21), has always been drawn to a life of service. After earning his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Florida College, he found that the U.S. Army offered both the challenge and the purpose he was looking for.
“I graduated from FC in 2021 with my Bachelor of Science in business administration,” he said. “The army was a goal of mine for a while, and service was always a key aspect of what I wanted to achieve in regards to my career.”
Today, that goal has become reality. McVicker now serves in the Army’s cyber branch as an electromagnetic warfare specialist, working in areas like signal jamming, direction finding, intelligence gathering, and non-lethal fires effects. It’s a demanding job that tests both skill and character, and one where he continues to rely on the discipline and faith that first took root at Florida College.
Looking ahead, McVicker plans to attend chiropractic school at Parker University in Dallas, Texas, once his time in the military is complete.
“FC did a great job at letting me have flexibility with my degree program, allowing me to finish my degree in Business, but still taking electives in Life Sciences that I needed to be prepared to achieve my future aspiration of chiropractic school,” he said.
Throughout his time at Florida College, McVicker found encouragement and guidance from professors who modeled integrity in their work and faith in their teaching.
“For me, FC is all about the faculty,” he said. “The experiences they have and bring to the table. I always appreciated sitting with Mr. Grieving and Dr. Gilliam and listening to their business stories. They imparted true wisdom in their fields while also imparting it in a way that provoked thought from their students. They made us consider the cost of success and how we can morally and righteously reach personal goals.”
McVicker now lives in Augusta, Georgia, with his wife, dog, cats, and chickens.
“This, living in the country with land, is another step towards our goals in achieving a holistic and rounded lifestyle centered in Christ and being more dependent on God,” he said.
Reflecting on his time at Florida College, McVicker believes those years shaped not only his career path but also his ability to stand firm in his faith amid the challenges of military life.
“FC helped me develop the skills I needed to stay faithful in the military,” he said. “There are a lot of daily trials and temptations in daily military life. FC helped me to be ready with a strong defense for my faith.”
McVicker’s story highlights how Florida College prepared him not only for a meaningful career but for a life rooted in faith and service. Those lessons continue to anchor him as he navigates the challenges and opportunities ahead.
