Integrity in Practice: Sloan Hastings’ (’18) Career in Law
January 16, 2026 | 3 min read
From the time he was in fourth grade, Sloan Hastings (‘18) knew he wanted to be an attorney. When it came time to choose a college, he sought a place that would academically prepare him while also strengthening his faith and fostering relationships. After watching several family members attend Florida College, he determined that it would be the ideal foundation, not only for law school but also for life.
As a pre-law student, Hastings pursued a liberal studies degree with components in biblical studies, church history, business, and Great Books. Each area offered valuable preparation, but he especially recommends Great Books to students considering a future in law. The coursework required extensive reading, rigorous examinations, and substantial writing, a rhythm he noted was nearly identical to the expectations of legal education. Hastings also completed the Honors Track, a capstone experience that required research, a written thesis, and a public defense. This sharpened his analytical thinking and helped prepare him for the academic challenges ahead.
Beyond the classroom, Hastings participated in student government, served as a society leader, and was inducted into Alpha Chi and Phi Theta Kappa, national honor societies for academic excellence. These experiences strengthened his leadership abilities and became essential components of his law school applications. After graduating from FC, he applied to three of Tennessee’s top law schools and was admitted to each. He ultimately chose Vanderbilt University, where he continued developing key skills first formed at Florida College.
During law school, Hastings gravitated toward commercial real estate work, which led to his first position with a firm in Nashville. The role was demanding and fast-paced, offering exposure to complex projects and major clients, including one of the nation’s largest for-profit hospital chains. After serving in this role, he began seeking a healthier work-life balance and a practice that allowed him to contribute more directly to his local community.
In 2024, Hastings transitioned to a smaller commercial real estate firm in Nashville, representing developers across the region. The work has given him a front-row view of the city’s growth.
“It’s encouraging to see projects I’ve contributed to going up around town and to know that my work has helped shape the community,” he shared.
Hastings remains closely connected to many of his Florida College friends, several of whom worship with him in Tennessee. He also continues to draw on lessons from his biblical studies and church history courses, using them in both personal study and teaching. These habits and relationships provide steady spiritual support as he navigates the demands of his career.
In both faith and work, Hastings strives for consistency and character.
“Every day I seek to act with integrity and honesty,” he said. “I have to remember this world is not my home, and I can do the best I can with the opportunities God gives me.”
It is this grounded, deliberate approach that shapes his service to clients, his community, and the church, reflecting the values he carried with him from Florida College.
